Wisconsin former veterans policy board head sentenced to prison for child pornography possession

The former head of the Wisconsin veterans policy board has been sentenced to three years in prison for the possession of child pornography. Curtis Schmitt Jr., 39, was convicted of three counts of child pornography possession in May and was also given three years of post-release supervision, as reported by FOX 6 in Milwaukee.

Appointed to the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs by Gov. Tony Evers in 2019, Schmitt’s appointment was confirmed by the state senate. However, he stepped down from his position in March 2022 after being charged with possessing child pornography on Jan. 23, 2022.

The criminal complaint revealed that two photos and a video depicting child pornography were uploaded to a Dropbox account linked to Schmitt’s email in December 2021. Schmitt admitted to police that he had an addiction to adult pornography and sometimes downloaded child pornography as well.

The veterans board collaborates with the secretary of Wisconsin’s Department of Veterans Affairs to develop benefits programs for veterans in Milwaukee by implementing administrative rules. Additionally, the board reviews recommendations and resolutions from veteran organizations within the state.

It is crucial to address and condemn such actions to protect the vulnerable and uphold the integrity of public service roles. The consequences of engaging in illegal activities, especially those involving exploitation and harm to children, are severe and have lasting repercussions on individuals and communities.

Moving forward, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially those who have served their country and deserve respect and support. By upholding ethical standards and accountability in leadership positions, we can ensure a more just and secure society for everyone.
