Texas 14-year-old suspect accused of breaking into cars was reportedly inspired by TikTok trend: police

A Texas adolescent was allegedly influenced by a popular TikTok trend when he engaged in breaking into nearly 40 vehicles, as reported by Plano police. The 14-year-old boy was apprehended while attempting to steal a car on July 6 in West Plano, after being caught by a homeowner and subsequently taken into custody by law enforcement.

Upon further investigation, Texas authorities discovered that this was not the teenager’s first offense, connecting him to a total of 38 thefts and attempted thefts. Plano Police Department Officer Jennifer Chapman elaborated, stating that the suspect was suspected of breaking into 38 cars, with some being attempted thefts and others successfully stolen.

The police department highlighted a recent trend on TikTok where users share methods on how to steal specific Hyundai and Kia vehicles, with the majority of the cars targeted by the suspect falling under these brands. Chapman emphasized that juveniles nationwide are engaging in similar activities, utilizing online platforms to learn about stealing cars and sharing this information with their peers.

In response to the rise in thefts related to the TikTok challenge, Kia and Hyundai introduced software in February to deter such criminal activities. Despite these efforts, thieves have continued to target certain models throughout the spring and summer months. In a significant development, both automakers settled a $200 million consumer class-action lawsuit in May stemming from the TikTok challenge.

Plano residents, like Patty Corsi, expressed concerns about the trend and its potential impact on their own vehicles, prompting them to be more vigilant. While Fox News Digital reached out to the Plano Police Department, Kia, and Hyundai for additional information, no responses have been received as of yet. The investigation into the case remains ongoing, with no further details available about the suspect at this time.

It is crucial for individuals to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to protect their vehicles from potential thefts linked to social media challenges.
