‘Trusted’ Florida babysitter takes young kids 1K miles across state lines, leaves them in park: police

Two young children, aged 1 and 2, were reportedly taken by a close family acquaintance and transported over 1,000 miles away from their residence in Florida before being abandoned in a park in Wisconsin once the babysitter became aware that law enforcement was pursuing her.

Adalyn Jean Burkett, 18, and Marquan Edwards, 22, were apprehended on Monday, following the mother of the missing children alerting the Bay County Sheriff’s Office in northwest Florida.

The pair allegedly embarked on a journey from Panama City, Florida, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with the children and their mother’s vehicle overnight on June 23 to June 24, as per the sheriff’s office.

Within less than 48 hours, authorities located the suspects, who left the children in a public park in Milwaukee in an attempt to distance themselves from the investigation and potential arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement issued a missing child alert for 2-year-old DeKarsen Middleton and 1-year-old Delyla Middleton, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants and the dissemination of information through local Milwaukee news outlets.

The children were discovered unharmed at the park on Sunday and taken care of by Milwaukee police, while Burkett and Edwards were pursued by the U.S. Marshals.

The youngsters were reunited with their family the following day, after a long journey to retrieve them, as recounted by their grandmother, Tina Leach, to local ABC affiliate WISN 12.

The mother of the children informed the Bay County Sheriff’s Office that Burkett, a trusted family friend who was babysitting her kids on the night they disappeared, had betrayed their trust.

Delving further into the background of the accused kidnapper Burkett, it was revealed that she had been reported as a missing runaway in Milwaukee at the age of 15 in 2020, according to a missing person report by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.

Prior to this incident, Burkett had not been seen since November 2021 in Milwaukee, with speculation that she may have been in Florida, as reported by Fox 6 news.

Milwaukee police have indicated that charges will be brought against Burkett through the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.

A horrifying incident involving a ‘trusted’ Florida babysitter has shocked the nation. According to police reports, the babysitter allegedly took young children 1,000 miles across state lines and left them in a park. The incident has shed light on the importance of vetting childcare providers and ensuring the safety of children at all times.

Details of the Incident

The babysitter, whose name has not been disclosed by authorities, was reportedly hired by a family in Florida to care for their two young children. However, instead of providing proper care and supervision, the babysitter allegedly took the children on a road trip that spanned over 1,000 miles, crossing multiple state lines.

After reaching their destination, the babysitter reportedly abandoned the children in a park and left them alone. Fortunately, the children were eventually found unharmed and safely returned to their family. The babysitter is currently facing criminal charges for her actions.

Importance of Vetting Childcare Providers

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of thoroughly vetting childcare providers before entrusting them with the care of your children. Here are some practical tips for ensuring the safety of your children:

– Conduct thorough background checks on all potential babysitters or childcare providers.

– Obtain references from previous employers or families who have used the babysitter’s services.

– Trust your instincts – if something feels off, do not hesitate to find a different childcare provider.

– Establish open communication with your children and encourage them to speak up if they ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe with a babysitter.

Case Studies

Unfortunately, incidents of childcare providers behaving inappropriately or negligently are not uncommon. In 2018, a babysitter in California was arrested for allegedly leaving a toddler in a hot car while she went shopping. The child tragically passed away as a result of heatstroke.

In another case, a daycare provider in Texas was charged with child abuse after surveillance footage showed her physically abusing young children in her care. These incidents underscore the importance of thoroughly vetting childcare providers and prioritizing the safety and well-being of children.
