Titan submersible recovery efforts continue with help of remotely operated vehicle

The recovery efforts for the Titan submersible, which experienced a catastrophic implosion near the Titanic wreckage, are currently in progress. As of the latest update, the mission has completed its fourth dive to the seafloor.

Confirmation from the U.S. Coast Guard last Thursday revealed that the debris field located approximately 1,600 feet from the Titanic wreckage belongs to the missing Titan submersible. The vessel was carrying five individuals when it lost contact with the surface ship shortly after descending to the Titanic site.

Pelagic Research Services (PRS) based in South Wellfleet, Massachusetts, was enlisted by OceanGate, the company behind Titan, to utilize their remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for assistance in the search operation. The ROV named Odysseus 6K successfully located the debris field in the search area on June 22.

Under the command of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the U.S. Coast Guard, with support from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, PRS continues to utilize the ROV for the recovery mission of Titan. The ongoing efforts have seen Odysseus embark on its fourth dive to the wreckage.

Ed Cassano, the CEO of PRS, expressed dedication to the mission alongside the crew of Horizon Arctic, led by Cpt. Adam Myers. The subsequent dives by Odysseus have enabled PRS to assist in the investigation and recovery led by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy.

The ROV’s capability to lift heavy objects remains crucial in the mission, as highlighted by PRS spokesperson Jeff Mahoney. The challenging nature of the recovery operation at such depths underscores the skill of the team and the engineering of Odysseus.
