Texas migrant deaths: Four more arrested in alleged human trafficking operation that left 53 dead

Four individuals from Mexico were taken into custody in relation to the deaths of 53 migrants who were discovered abandoned inside a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas last year, as announced by federal prosecutors on the one-year anniversary of the tragic incident.

The Justice Department revealed that the accused were aware of the malfunctioning air-conditioning system in the trailer, which led to the lack of cool air circulation for the migrants inside. The suspects were identified as Riley Covarrubias-Ponce, 30; Felipe Orduna-Torres, 28; Luis Alberto Rivera-Leal, 37; and Armando Gonzales-Ortega, 53.

Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco expressed, “One year ago today, an unimaginable crime committed by human traffickers at our southern border resulted in the loss of 53 lives. However, the recent arrests signify that those who exploit desperation for profit will face legal consequences.”

All four suspects are charged with conspiracy to transport immigrants resulting in death, severe bodily harm, and endangering lives. If convicted, each individual could potentially receive a life sentence.

The arrests took place in Houston, San Antonio, and Marshall, Texas, according to authorities.

Prosecutors stated that the accused individuals exchanged information about the migrants who were to be smuggled in a truck for the journey from Laredo, Texas to San Antonio, which lasted nearly three hours.

Orduna-Torres provided the pickup location, where Gonzalez-Ortega met the migrants. The four suspects then coordinated the transportation and communicated about the truck’s progress during the trip to San Antonio.

The deceased individuals were found on June 27, 2022, and included migrants who had been smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico – 27 from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, seven from Guatemala, and two from El Salvador. Among the deceased were eight children.

The truck was discovered on a remote road in San Antonio.

The driver, Homero Zamorano Jr. from Elkhart, Texas, had previously been charged in July 2022 along with Christian Martinez from Palestine, Texas. Zamorano was apprehended when authorities found him hiding near the truck.

At the scene, authorities discovered 48 deceased migrants, with the remaining 16 being taken to local hospitals, where five of them later passed away.
