Tennessee man jailed for using spotlight to hunt deer, threatening landowner

A man from Tennessee has been sentenced to jail and banned for life from hunting in the state after he unlawfully killed 15 deer over a span of more than three years and threatened a landowner with a firearm while poaching deer on his property, according to wildlife officials.

The individual entered a guilty plea on February 22 in Hawkins County, east Tennessee, for charges including aggravated assault, using a spotlight to hunt deer, hunting from a vehicle, and hunting big game during a closed season, as reported by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

In an incident in August, the man and another individual were hunting from a road in Rogersville and utilized a spotlight to kill a doe and a seven-point buck from a vehicle during the closed deer hunting season. When confronted by the landowner, the man brandished a gun and made threats, the agency disclosed.

Subsequently, they were apprehended by a sheriff’s deputy and discovered to be in possession of a spotlight and hunting rifles.

The act of using a spotlight to hunt deer at night is prohibited in Tennessee. This method involves shining an artificial light at deer, causing them to freeze as they gaze at the light, enabling the hunter to take a shot before the deer flees, the agency explained. Additionally, shooting, capturing, or killing any animal from a public road is also forbidden in the state.

Following his guilty plea, the man from Whitesburg was sentenced to serve six months of a four-year term for aggravated assault, and six months for each of the charges related to hunting big game during a closed season. These sentences will be served concurrently, the agency stated.

In addition to fines and court fees, he was ordered to pay $12,500 in restitution and had his hunting privileges permanently revoked. He also forfeited a spotlight, a muzzleloader, a rifle, and a compound bow, along with deer meat, turkey parts, and 14 sets of deer antlers.

Furthermore, the individual had a prior conviction for poaching in 2021, involving spotlighting, hunting from a public roadway, and hunting deer during a closed season in Greene County.

According to wildlife officer Justin Pinkston, over a period of 3 1/2 years, the man was charged with illegally killing 15 deer and confessed to poaching 20 deer from the road in 2020 alone. Regrettably, most of these deer were left unclaimed and unrecovered.
