New York man hiding out in Florida for 3 years pleads guilty to 2018 ‘senseless’ pool hall murder

A man from Port Jefferson, New York, has recently admitted to the murder of a 27-year-old father of three in 2018 following a physical altercation that stemmed from an argument at a local pool hall. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney announced that Alejandro Vargas-Diaz, 41, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Albert Luis Rodriguez-Lopez from Selden, New York.

According to court documents and statements provided during the guilty plea, Vargas-Diaz and Rodriguez-Lopez engaged in a heated argument at a Port Jefferson pool hall on July 22, 2018. The situation escalated when Rodriguez-Lopez punched Vargas-Diaz in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. In retaliation, Vargas-Diaz ambushed Rodriguez-Lopez inside the pool hall and shot him in the back, neck, and shoulder, resulting in his tragic death at the scene. Vargas-Diaz then fled the state.

After nearly a month, investigators from the Suffolk County Police Department discovered the murder weapon, a 9mm pistol, hidden in a tree along the Setauket Port Jefferson Greenway Trail. A tip from Crime Stoppers eventually led to the apprehension of Vargas-Diaz on June 18, 2021, with the assistance of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. He was extradited back to Suffolk County, New York on Nov. 11, 2021, to face charges of murder.

In a court appearance before Acting Supreme Court Justice Steven A. Pilewski, Vargas-Diaz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is set to receive his sentencing on Sept. 13, 2023, with a potential sentence of 23 years to life in prison. Tierney expressed relief for the victim’s family, stating that justice has finally been served after years of waiting. He emphasized that despite Vargas-Diaz’s attempt to evade capture by hiding in another state, the law eventually caught up with him, holding him accountable for his actions.
