Georgia Army soldier pleads guilty to attempting to help ISIS ambush US forces in Middle East

An individual serving in the U.S. Army has admitted to trying to aid the Islamic State terrorist group in planning an attack on his fellow soldiers in the Middle East, believing he was communicating with a member of the organization.

Cole Bridges, a 22-year-old soldier, has pleaded guilty in a federal court in Manhattan to charges of providing support to terrorists and attempting to harm U.S. military personnel.

Originally from Stow, Ohio, Bridges was stationed at Fort Stewart with the Third Infantry Division as a cavalry scout when the incident occurred. He enlisted in the Army in September 2019.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams condemned Bridges’ actions, stating that his attempt to organize an attack on his fellow soldiers in support of ISIS was a betrayal of his country and comrades.

Shortly after joining the Army, Bridges began consuming ISIS propaganda online and expressing his allegiance to the group on social media platforms.

In October 2020, he engaged in conversations with an undercover FBI agent posing as an ISIS sympathizer with connections to fighters in the Middle East. Bridges reportedly shared his dissatisfaction with the Army and provided advice on attack planning and potential targets in New York City.

He also allegedly shared an Army manual on combat tactics with the agent.

By December 2020, Bridges was offering guidance on how ISIS fighters could carry out assaults on U.S. forces in the Middle East, including strategies to defend against attacks by U.S. Special Forces.

In January 2021, Bridges sent the undercover agent a video of himself wearing his Army-issued body armor in front of an ISIS flag, making a gesture in support of the group. Additionally, he recorded a video using a voice-altering device to deliver a propaganda speech endorsing an ambush on U.S. soldiers.

When sentenced on November 2, Bridges could face a maximum of 10 years in prison for his crimes.
