Second structural issue discovered on Carowinds roller coaster after massive crack forces ride to shut down

A New Discovery at Carowinds Amusement Park Roller Coaster

A recent structural issue has been uncovered at a popular amusement park roller coaster in North Carolina, just a month after a significant crack was detected on the ride.

The initial crack on the Fury 325 giga roller coaster at Carowinds was spotted on a steel support beam by a park visitor named Jeremy Wagner on June 30. Upon noticing the crack while riders were on the attraction, Wagner promptly informed park officials, leading to a temporary closure of the ride.

Video footage shared with Fox News Digital captured the area surrounding the crack visibly shaking, with an observable air gap where the weld should have been.

In response to the situation, the amusement park reported that they were collaborating with the ride manufacturer to install a new support column and conducting necessary testing.

However, the North Carolina Department of Labor disclosed a statement indicating the discovery of a second “weld indication,” which could potentially signify either a break or a crack in the structure.

Meredith Watson, a spokesperson for the North Carolina Department of Labor, emphasized that no certificate of operation had been issued for the Fury 325, and there was no definitive timeline for when it would be granted.

A certificate of operation is a mandatory requirement for the roller coaster to resume operations.

When questioned by Fox News Digital, a Carowinds representative clarified that during routine maintenance assessments, it is not uncommon to identify minor weld indications in various parts of a steel superstructure. The spokesperson reassured that these indications do not compromise the ride’s structural integrity or safety.

The amusement park announced that a comprehensive maintenance review of Fury 325 was underway, encompassing an examination of the steel superstructure, trains, and ride control system. Non-destructive testing is being conducted to determine the appropriate course of action for any identified issues. Following repairs, thorough inspections and approval processes are carried out before the ride is deemed operational. Test cycles are also performed to ensure smooth operation before guests are permitted on the ride.

The spokesperson affirmed that a series of detailed tests and inspections are ongoing in preparation for the reopening of Fury 325.

North Carolina Department of Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson emphasized the importance of ensuring complete confidence before issuing a new certificate of operation for the roller coaster. He stated that the process would take as long as necessary to guarantee safety.

Fury 325 is described on the amusement park’s website as the tallest, fastest, and longest giga coaster in North America. With speeds reaching up to 95 mph and a peak height of 325 feet, the ride features a thrilling 81-degree drop.

The roller coaster’s closure and maintenance procedures have garnered attention, highlighting the significance of safety measures in the amusement park industry.

Second Structural Issue Discovered on Carowinds Roller Coaster After Massive Crack Forces Ride to Shut Down

Carowinds, a popular amusement park located on the border of North and South Carolina, has been dealing with a major setback after a massive crack was discovered on one of its most iconic roller coasters. The ride, known as Fury 325, had to be shut down indefinitely for safety reasons while engineers and maintenance crews worked to assess and repair the damage.

Discovery of Second Structural Issue

Unfortunately for Carowinds, the troubles with Fury 325 did not end with the initial crack. After further inspection, a second structural issue was discovered on the roller coaster, adding to the park’s challenges in getting the ride back up and running. The nature and extent of this second issue have not been disclosed to the public, but it has undoubtedly added to the complexity and urgency of the repairs needed on the ride.

Impact on Park Operations

The closure of Fury 325 has had a significant impact on Carowinds’ operations, as the roller coaster is one of the park’s main attractions and draws in large crowds of thrill-seekers each day. The loss of revenue from ticket sales and concessions, as well as the negative publicity surrounding the closure, have put added pressure on the park to resolve the issues with the ride quickly and efficiently.

Lessons Learned and Future Plans

This ordeal has undoubtedly been a learning experience for Carowinds and its management team. Moving forward, the park will need to prioritize regular inspections and maintenance on all of its rides to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Additionally, the park may need to invest in new technology or structural improvements to ensure the safety and longevity of its attractions.

Despite the challenges faced by Carowinds, the park remains committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for its guests. With proper planning and attention to detail, Carowinds will likely overcome this setback and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Benefits and Practical Tips

  • Regular inspections and maintenance can prevent major structural issues on rides.
  • Investing in new technology and improvements can enhance safety and guest satisfaction.
  • Transparent communication with guests about ride closures is essential for managing expectations.

Case Studies

Other amusement parks have also faced challenges with ride maintenance and structural issues. For example, Cedar Point in Ohio had to temporarily shut down its Top Thrill Dragster ride due to mechanical problems. By learning from these case studies and implementing best practices, parks like Carowinds can better prepare for and mitigate similar incidents in the future.

Firsthand Experience

Visitors to Carowinds during the closure of Fury 325 have shared their experiences on social media and review sites. Many guests have expressed disappointment and frustration at the ride being unavailable, while others have praised the park’s handling of the situation and their commitment to safety. By listening to feedback from guests and incorporating it into their plans, Carowinds can improve the overall guest experience and rebuild trust with park visitors.
