Random home invasion suspect ‘got bored’ during sexual assault of woman in wheelchair: report

A man from New Jersey reportedly entered a random woman’s home during daylight hours, sexually assaulted her, and attempted to kill her, as per reports. The victim, an elderly woman who uses a wheelchair, was targeted by the suspect, Justin Surofsky, 26. Surprisingly, Surofsky abruptly halted the assault and left the victim’s residence, claiming he was bored, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Patch.

Following his apprehension, Surofsky confessed to authorities that he felt relieved to be caught due to his sociopathic tendencies and sexual ideations. Additionally, he admitted to attempting to break into other homes in Piscataway, New Jersey, although those efforts were unsuccessful. However, he managed to gain entry into the victim’s home through her garage door around 1:24 p.m. on Thursday, as detailed in the affidavit.

Upon awakening to find Surofsky in her bedroom armed with a knife and garden hoe, the victim recounted being subjected to a harrowing sexual assault. She described how he repeatedly struck her with the garden hoe and a five-pound weight, while also attempting to suffocate her with a pillow. Despite her efforts to persuade him to leave by offering money, Surofsky proceeded to strangle her, knock her off her wheelchair, and continue his violent assault before fleeing with her iPhone.

The victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, although her current condition remains undisclosed. Law enforcement officers utilized the “Find my iPhone” feature to track Surofsky to a Wawa in Piscataway, where he was captured discarding incriminating evidence. Subsequently, Surofsky, a resident of Highstown, New Jersey, was apprehended in East Windsor and is now detained at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center.

Facing a litany of charges including sexual assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder, Surofsky’s arrest followed a community alert on social media warning of his suspicious behavior captured on surveillance cameras. The incident, which occurred in close proximity to the childhood home of Piscataway Township Mayor Brian Wahler, elicited a strong emotional response from local officials.

Expressing his shock and dismay at the violent acts committed within the community, Mayor Wahler emphasized the need for swift justice and severe punishment for the perpetrator. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the victim and her family, assuring them of the town’s unwavering support during this challenging time.

The charges against Surofsky include aggravated sexual assault, attempted murder, burglary, criminal sexual contact, kidnapping, criminal restraint, aggravated assault, and robbery. The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with pertinent information or surveillance footage to come forward and assist in the case. Detective Morelli of the Piscataway Police Department and Detective Castro of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office can be reached for further inquiries.
