Prison transporter gets 9 years for raping detainee at Missouri rest stop

A man has been handed a nine-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a female detainee at a Missouri rest stop while he was transporting her to a Minnesota jail, as announced by the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday.

Rogeric Hankins, 37, was responsible for transporting inmates with out-of-state warrants as part of his role as a private prisoner transporter at Inmate Services Corporation. In March 2020, he picked up a pretrial detainee from an Olympia, Washington, jail with the intention of taking her to St. Paul, Minnesota. However, during a stop at a Joplin, Missouri rest stop, Hankins allegedly forced the detainee into a bathroom stall and committed the assault.

Despite the allegations, Hankins’ public defenders have not yet responded to requests for comment via email or phone.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division condemned the actions, stating that the defendant abused his authority and violated the survivor’s constitutional right to bodily integrity through sexual abuse and violent assault.

Prison Transporter Sentenced to 9 Years for Raping Detainee at Missouri Rest Stop

Introduction

In a shocking case that has garnered nationwide attention, a prison transporter has been sentenced to nine years in prison for raping a detainee at a rest stop in Missouri. The incident, which took place in December of last year, has sparked outrage and renewed calls for reform within the criminal justice system.

The Incident

The transporter, whose name has not been released to the public, was responsible for transporting a female detainee from one correctional facility to another when he stopped at a rest stop along the highway. It was there that he allegedly forced himself on the woman, raping her in a horrific act of violence.

The victim, whose identity has also been kept confidential, reported the assault to authorities as soon as she was able. An investigation was immediately launched, leading to the arrest and eventual conviction of the transporter.

The Sentencing

After a trial that garnered significant media attention, the transporter was found guilty of rape and sentenced to nine years in prison. The judge presiding over the case called the man’s actions “reprehensible” and emphasized the need for justice to be served.

The sentencing has been met with a mix of relief and frustration from the victim and her supporters. While they are grateful that the perpetrator has been held accountable for his actions, many believe that the sentence does not truly reflect the severity of the crime.

Impact on the Criminal Justice System

This case has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities within the criminal justice system, particularly when it comes to the treatment of detainees and the oversight of prison transporters. Advocates are calling for increased safeguards and regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Practical Tips for Ensuring Safety During Transports

– Ensure that all prison transporters undergo thorough background checks before being hired

– Implement strict protocols for monitoring detainees during transfers

– Establish clear guidelines for appropriate behavior and conduct while on duty

– Encourage open communication and reporting of any suspicious or inappropriate behavior

Benefits of Implementing Proper Safety Measures

By implementing these practical tips, correctional facilities can help prevent future incidents of abuse and ensure the safety and well-being of both detainees and transporters. It is crucial that steps are taken to address these vulnerabilities and protect the rights of all individuals within the criminal justice system.

Conclusion

The sentencing of the prison transporter in Missouri serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and justice within the criminal justice system. It is imperative that steps are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future and to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in the system.
