Pennsylvania man drowns after rescuing 2 children struggling in Bucks County creek

Tragic Incident at Pennsylvania State Park Claims Hero’s Life

A heartbreaking incident unfolded at a Pennsylvania state park where a 37-year-old man lost his life while heroically rescuing two children in distress. The Bucks County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Marvin Alexan Fernandez Chicas tragically drowned while saving the children at Nockamixon State Park.

The unfortunate event occurred when Chicas noticed the struggling children at Tohickon Creek around 5 p.m. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water to bring them to safety, but sadly, he succumbed to the waters.

Efforts to locate Chicas involved the deployment of around 10 divers, as reported by Haycock Township Fire Chief Harry Grim. Despite their best efforts, Chicas’ body was recovered two hours later.

Safety Regulations and Risks at the Park

It is important to note that the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources strictly prohibits swimmers from entering Tohickon Creek due to its potential dangers. Additionally, swimming in Lake Nockamixon, the largest lake in Bucks County spanning 1,450 acres, is also prohibited.

Grim emphasized the risks associated with swimming in these areas, highlighting how deceivingly deep parts of the creeks and lakes can be along the shore. He expressed concern over individuals disregarding safety regulations and the tragic consequences that can result from such actions.

A Cautionary Reminder

In light of this tragic incident, Grim issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to refrain from swimming in Lake Nockamixon, especially during this time of year when visibility is extremely poor. He emphasized the zero visibility conditions, noting that even divers at a depth of 10 feet struggle to see their own hands in front of their faces.

It is crucial for visitors to adhere to park regulations and exercise caution when engaging in water activities to prevent further tragedies like the one that claimed Chicas’ life. Let us remember his selfless act of bravery and strive to prioritize safety in all our recreational pursuits.
