Pennsylvania grand jury charges more Jehovah’s Witness suspects with child rape, molestation

A recent development in Pennsylvania has seen five additional men associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses community facing charges of raping or molesting child victims as part of an ongoing investigation into the organization.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry made the announcement during a press conference on Friday, revealing the identities of the five suspects: Shaun Sheffer, 45; David Balosa, 62; Errol William Hall, 50; Terry Booth, 57; and Luis Ayala-Velasquez, 55.

While Sheffer, Booth, Hall, and Ayala-Velasquez have been taken into custody, Balosa remains at large. Henry disclosed that all the accused individuals had interactions with children within the church community.

One victim recounted being raped over 50 times between the ages of 7 and 12 by a church member who was between 18 and 23 years old at the time, according to Henry.

Additional allegations involve inappropriate touching and grooming, with some assaults occurring when a perpetrator was taken into a child’s family home.

Continued Investigation and Previous Charges

These new charges are part of an ongoing investigation into child sex abuse within the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization. Earlier this year, five associates were indicted on various child sex abuse charges, bringing the total number of identified suspects to 14.

Church spokesperson Jarrod Lopes expressed the church’s dismay at the news of sexual abuse but refrained from commenting on the recent charges.

Church Response and Support for Victims

Lopes highlighted the church’s efforts to educate and alert parents through publications, meetings, and their website on safeguarding children in different situations. The church also provides support and pastoral care to those affected while ensuring that unrepentant perpetrators are removed from the congregation.

He emphasized that any victim of abuse has the congregation’s full backing to report the incident to the authorities.
