An experienced North Carolina state trooper was deemed justified in the fatal shooting of an armed suspect during a traffic stop where the suspect opened fire on him, with only his bulletproof vest preventing a tragedy, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
Trooper Jeffrey L. Dunlap of the State Highway Patrol was shot in the chest just after 7:30 p.m. on July 3 while assisting a stranded motorist on Interstate 26, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams stated that his office thoroughly examined police dashcam footage of the incident, leading to the exoneration of Dunlap from any potential misconduct.
“No criminal charges will be pursued in this case, and the NC SBI (State Bureau of Investigation) may conclude its inquiry,” Williams declared. “I have informed Taylor’s family of this resolution. The DA’s Office expresses gratitude to all our brave law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to uphold public safety.”
During the encounter, Wesley Scott Taylor brandished a .44 magnum pistol and fired at Dunlap, as per Williams.
Life-Saving Vest
Williams, a 13-year veteran of the Highway Patrol, retaliated after his vest intercepted a bullet aimed at his chest, Williams explained.
“Thankfully, Trooper Dunlap’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet fired by Taylor,” he remarked.
Dunlap responded by returning fire, resulting in the death of Taylor, 57, at the scene. Dunlap was treated at a hospital and later discharged. He was subsequently put on administrative leave, following standard procedure.
The incident is currently under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
