Newton triple murder suspect seen acting strange, barely clothed morning he stabbed victim 30 times: DA

A suspect who was being sought for a triple homicide that shocked a Massachusetts town is now in police custody.

Christopher Ferguson, 41, is accused of murdering Jill and Bruno D’Amore, aged 73 and 74, as well as Jill’s 97-year-old mother, Lucia Arpino, in their Newton residence during a seemingly random and failed home invasion, according to authorities who spoke during a press conference on Monday night.

Jill sustained over 30 stab and blunt force injuries, resulting in her death being classified as a homicide by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

As of Monday night, there was only one murder charge, pending the completion of autopsies for Bruno and Arpino, which is anticipated to change on Tuesday, as indicated by the district attorney.

Ferguson, who was known to law enforcement, was captured on surveillance footage in the vicinity without shoes and a shirt at 5:20 a.m. on Sunday, Ryan mentioned, although it is unclear whether the video footage was from before or after the alleged murders.

The scene of the crime was about 100 yards from his residence and approximately four-tenths of a mile from the crime location, she added.

“Evidence of a struggle was evident in one of the bedrooms, with broken furniture and a crystal paperweight drenched in blood,” DA Ryan stated, noting that a blood-stained knife was found in the kitchen.

Having no known ties to the family, Ferguson allegedly forced his way into the house through a basement window, the district attorney explained.

He left behind bloody footprints resembling fingerprints, further linking him to the crime scene, Ryan emphasized.

Ferguson was taken to the hospital after his arrest, with additional charges expected to be filed against him at his arraignment, according to the top county prosecutors.

An arraignment date is yet to be determined, but it may occur as early as the following day.

The unexpected assault in an otherwise peaceful and affluent community left residents shocked and wary, creating a heightened sense of fear in the city, as stated by Jim Sbordone, a former Newton firefighter and a close friend of the D’Amore family.

Law enforcement and the district attorney advised residents during a press conference on Sunday night to secure their residences by locking doors and windows and remaining vigilant for any suspicious activity.

Authorities shared the sentiment that the city can breathe a sigh of relief now that Ferguson is in custody.

“While it’s always important to remain cautious, I can confidently say that we are much safer tonight than we were yesterday,” Ryan reassured.

Jill and Bruno were tragically killed just a day, perhaps only hours, before they were set to renew their wedding vows for their 50th anniversary at a church in Newton, where they were devoted members and never missed Sunday mass.

The parish’s pastor, Rev. Dan Riley, described them as exceptional individuals who will be sorely missed.

The Collaborative staff issued a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the senseless act of violence that claimed the lives of the three victims.

Riley, also known as Father Dan, penned a heartfelt tribute for the couple, which he shared with Fox News Digital, acknowledging the overwhelming support from the community and authorities during this tragic time.

A “Mass of Peace” followed by a prayer through song for the family has been scheduled for Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
