Maryland man sentenced to life without parole in killing of deputy during fugitive hunt

A man in Maryland was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole by a judge for the murder of Cpl. Glenn Hilliard from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

In June 2022, Austin Jacob Allen Davidson, 21, from Delmar, Maryland, was being sought for four outstanding arrest warrants when he encountered Hilliard, from Berlin, Maryland, and fatally shot him.

Following a six-day trial overseen by the Honorable S. James Sarbanes of the Wicomico County Circuit Court, Davidson was found guilty in May of first- and second-degree murder, two counts of burglary, firearm use in a violent crime, and six other gun-related charges.

During the sentencing, Sarbanes handed down a life sentence without parole for Davidson, along with an additional 66 years, as per a statement from Wicomico County State’s Attorney Jamie Dykes’ office.

Hilliard and other deputies responded to a call from a citizen on the evening of June 12, 2022, reporting Davidson’s presence near Pittsville Park.

While patrolling the area, Hilliard spotted a man matching Davidson’s description walking along Gumboro Road.

As Hilliard turned his patrol vehicle around, Davidson entered an apartment complex and hid in the stairwell of a building.

The DA’s office reported that Hilliard parked near the stairwell, prompting Davidson to exit and run around the building.

Hilliard took out his department-issued Taser and chased after Davidson, closing the distance to less than 10 feet, warning Davidson that he would be “Tased” if he did not stop.

Instead of complying, Davidson pulled out a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol with a laser sight, turned, and fired multiple shots at Hilliard, hitting him twice.

Hilliard was taken to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland, where he was pronounced dead.

“Our community has suffered greatly due to Cpl. Glenn Hilliard’s murderer,” Dykes stated. “This Defendant has received the appropriate sentence from Judge Sarbanes. I hope that Glenn’s legacy of service and kindness continues to resonate in our community.”
