Maryland man arrested after allegedly impersonating a police officer

A man from Maryland was apprehended for impersonating a police officer after attempting to pull over a victim who promptly reported the incident to authorities. Carl Colston, aged 47, tried to initiate a traffic stop on July 8 at the Greenbelt Road off-ramp on 201 Northbound in Greenbelt. The victim informed Greenbelt Police that Colston approached him in a black Crown Victoria, honking and flashing his interior lights.

When the victim gestured for Colston to pass, he did so while displaying a badge. Colston then stopped in the middle of the road, forcing the victim to halt as well, before driving behind the victim in a manner reminiscent of a police officer, trying to conduct a traffic stop.

The victim recounted to the police that Colston donned a Maryland Marshal tactical vest, brandished a badge, identified himself as an officer, and called for backup using a handheld radio. While Colston held a black pistol, he did not aim it at the victim but raised it visibly.

Upon being informed that the police were being contacted and recorded, Colston returned to his vehicle and drove off. Colston was subsequently arrested by the police on July 13 at 9:10 p.m. following a traffic stop.

Individuals who may have encountered Colston posing as an officer are encouraged to reach out to the police department for assistance.
