Louisiana man critical of child welfare officials faces murder charge in infant daughter’s death

A man from New Orleans who previously voiced strong disapproval towards Louisiana child welfare authorities following an investigation into his infant son’s bruises in 2021, is now facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his baby daughter.

Christopher Strickland, aged 42, was granted release on a $175,000 bond subsequent to his arrest on Thursday, which also included charges of cruelty to a juvenile, as reported by The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate.

Allegations suggest that Strickland shook his 5-month-old daughter, Louisa Strickland, resulting in severe injuries. His legal representative released a statement asserting Strickland’s innocence in causing harm to his child.

Strickland informed medical professionals that he had shaken the infant in an effort to revive her upon discovering her unresponsive. During a bond hearing on Thursday, defense attorney Sarah Chervinsky stated that the shaking was a response to finding the baby in an unresponsive state.

RECORD-BREAKING HEAT SCORCHES SOUTH; PARTS OF TEXAS COULD TOP 120 DEGREES

According to records cited by the newspaper, Strickland dialed 911 on February 28 to report that his baby was unresponsive at their residence. Strickland administered CPR to the infant and accompanied emergency medical personnel to Children’s Hospital, as detailed in the warrant. Tragically, the baby passed away two days later.

The New Orleans coroner concluded that the primary cause of death was complications arising from abusive head trauma.

In a 2021 feature by WDSU-TV, Strickland and his wife Tess expressed dissatisfaction with the extensive and unjustified child abuse inquiry they underwent after Tess brought their son to the hospital in 2020 to have a bruise examined. The child was temporarily removed from the parents’ care. Eventually, the judge overseeing the case ordered the child to be returned to the parents and criticized the state’s procedures, according to the station’s coverage.

The boy, now approximately 3 years old, has once again been taken from his parents’ custody and placed with his grandparents, as reported by The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate.
