Florida surfer attacked by shark credits friend for life-saving rescue: ‘Could have been way worse’

CAUTION: The following account includes a vivid image that may be unsettling to some viewers.

An individual from Florida who enjoys surfing is currently recuperating after being attacked by a shark at New Smyrna Beach last week. He attributes his survival to the quick thinking and bravery of his friend.

Chris Pospisil and Reece Redish, both surfers from Brevard County, Florida, formed a strong friendship during the pandemic. Last Friday, while searching for the perfect wave, they found themselves at the popular beach on Florida’s east coast.

As their day in the water drew to a close, 21-year-old Pospisil, a member of the surf team at the University of Central Florida, was bitten by a shark.

“The shark approached from beneath me, on my board, and knocked me off, and as I fell backward, I saw my foot in its mouth, dragging me under,” Pospisil recounted to FOX 35 Orlando.

Redish sprang into action to rescue his friend. When Pospisil resurfaced, Redish was there, holding him by his shirt and helping him back onto his board.

“I wouldn’t leave my friend in the water,” Redish stated. “I’m willing to take risks to assist anyone.”

Pospisil emphasized that his friend’s swift actions were crucial.

“If he hadn’t been there, the situation could have been much worse, and I likely wouldn’t have made it to shore in time and might have lost consciousness in the water,” he expressed to FOX 35.

The surfer sustained significant damage to his left foot during the attack, losing approximately “one large Chick-fil-a sized cup of blood,” according to a GoFundMe page set up by his family.

During surgery, seven tendons and a few small arteries were repaired, and a skin graft was necessary to cover Pospisil’s foot. Additionally, doctors discovered fragments of the shark’s tooth embedded in his bone.

“Certain areas of the top of my foot will remain numb for the rest of my life, and my foot may be stiff due to the repair of all seven tendons,” he explained regarding his injuries.

Although Pospisil is now mobile with crutches, he faces a lengthy recovery period as he is prohibited from using his injured foot for six to eight weeks. He will also undergo six months of physical therapy.

Despite this setback, he remains positive and looks forward to surfing again once he receives medical clearance.

“This incident hasn’t changed anything. I will continue to surf. It’s my passion, and something I deeply enjoy,” Pospisil affirmed.

Both Pospisil and Redish expressed that they do not want this event to instill fear of sharks or the ocean in people, believing that the shark did not intend to harm him.

In their GoFundMe statement, Pospisil’s family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support, as his recovery will require him to miss a semester of school and months of work.

As of early Wednesday morning, the fundraising campaign had raised over $2,400.
