Island residents seek $40M from Wisconsin city over PFAS contamination

Residents of an island contaminated with PFAS chemicals are seeking over $40 million in compensation from a city in western Wisconsin that they hold accountable for the pollution.

Wisconsin municipalities are facing challenges due to PFAS, which are synthetic chemicals found in various products like cookware, firefighting foam, and stain-resistant clothing. These substances are persistent in the environment and have been linked to numerous health issues in humans.

In June 2021, more than 500 wells in Campbell, located on French Island, tested positive for PFAS, with some wells showing levels thousands of times higher than recommended by federal guidelines.

Legal representatives for numerous Campbell residents have filed claims against the city of La Crosse, demanding a total of $42.4 million to compensate for the decrease in property value caused by the contamination.

The city, situated across the Black River from French Island, has its airport on the island. The claims suggest that the use of firefighting foam for training at the airport since the 1970s led to the contamination. Additionally, the claims state that the city was aware of elevated PFAS levels in the island’s groundwater as early as 2014 but failed to inform residents.

If the city rejects the claims, residents have the option to pursue a lawsuit. The city’s attorney, Stephen Matty, did not respond to a voicemail seeking comment.

In 2021, the city filed a lawsuit against nearly two dozen chemical companies, alleging that they were aware of the toxicity of PFAS since the 1960s. This case was moved to federal court in South Carolina and became part of a larger lawsuit against PFAS manufacturers involving numerous plaintiffs, including state and local governments. Some manufacturers have settled parts of the broader case for billions of dollars.
