Homicides decreasing in US Cities, but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels, new report shows

A recent study examining data from 30 American cities has revealed a decrease in homicides, although the numbers still remain elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels. The Council on Criminal Justice, a nonpartisan organization, reported a 9.4% drop in homicides during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year.

Despite this decline, the homicide rates are approximately 24% higher than they were in 2019. Additionally, there has been a significant increase in motor vehicle thefts in the cities under analysis.

Richard Rosenfeld, a criminology and criminal justice professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and one of the report’s authors, noted, “We’re observing a sustained decrease in homicides, but most cities have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.”

The report utilized crime data published online by police departments in 37 cities across the United States. While some major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago were included, data for cities such as Houston and San Diego was not immediately accessible. Among the 30 cities that reported homicide numbers, 20 showed a decrease.

Jeff Asher, a crime analyst and consultant at AH Datalytics, who was not involved in the report, highlighted that the findings align with the overall downward trend in crime rates in the United States following a significant surge during the pandemic. Asher maintains a database tracking murder rates in approximately 100 cities and has observed similar patterns.

“The decline has been widespread. While not universal, it has been prevalent enough to rule out mere chance,” Asher stated.

The decrease in homicides follows a 29% spike in 2020, according to FBI data, marking the largest one-year increase since the agency began record-keeping. However, these rates still remain below the peak levels seen in the 1990s.
