Forth Worth cop hit by car, dragged 100 feet, returning to force after 3-year recovery

A police officer in Fort Worth who was struck by a vehicle and dragged 100 feet is set to return to duty next month following a three-year recovery period.

Officer Matt Brazeal sustained critical injuries on June 13, 2020, around 11:30 a.m. when a suspect fleeing the scene hit him with a stolen car near West Loop 820. Brazeal was in the process of deploying STOP Sticks and a tire-deflation device in an effort to stop the suspect.

Without warning, the suspect swerved, causing Brazeal to be dragged over 100 feet. This resulted in a broken pelvis, fractures, a collapsed lung, and a brain injury for the officer.

Over the course of the next few years, Brazeal underwent approximately 60 surgeries and rehabilitation sessions. His most recent procedure, which he hopes will be his final one, took place on Wednesday.

“Remaining positive can be challenging at times,” Brazeal shared in an interview with FOX 4. “After waking up from surgery and being told I had to wait another six weeks before doing anything, I was taken aback. I was prepared. It requires a great deal of mental strength.”

Chief Neil Noakes of the Fort Worth PD, who has developed a strong bond with Brazeal during his recovery, commended the officer’s resilience for helping him navigate these difficult circumstances.

“Had it not been for his exceptional physical and mental toughness, I’m not sure how he would have persevered,” Noakes remarked.

The suspect, 38-year-old Ronnie Jackson Jr., was swiftly apprehended following the incident involving Brazeal. Jackson’s criminal trial is scheduled to commence in September.
