Bryan Kohberger’s defense claims Idaho murders suspect has ‘no connection’ with victims

The Defense of Bryan Kohberger strongly criticized the methods employed by prosecutors in collecting DNA evidence, utilizing genetic genealogy, and tracking a white sedan to link their client to the murders of four University of Idaho students.

During the investigation, DNA from three unidentified males was discovered at the crime scene, with traces found on a glove outside the residence in Moscow, Idaho, where Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin were tragically killed in November. This revelation was detailed in a court filing dated June 22.

The defense team called into question the basis for law enforcement’s focus on Mr. Kohberger, raising concerns about the reliability of genetic genealogy and the assumption regarding the involvement of a white Elantra in the case.

“Regardless of whether the genetic genealogy or the discovery of the white Elantra came first, the investigative process has yielded little substantial evidence,” argued Kohberger’s defense team, emphasizing the absence of a direct link between their client and the victims.

In the court document, Kohberger’s lawyers expressed uncertainty about the extent of testing conducted on the three unidentified DNA samples, hinting at gaps in the investigative process.

Kohberger is accused of perpetrating the murders of four Idaho students in a rental property on November 13, 2022.

The latest prosecution filing outlined the methodology employed to link DNA from a knife sheath discovered near Mogen’s remains to Kohberger, highlighting a “statistical match” between DNA recovered from the sheath and a cheek swab taken post-arrest.

They accused the prosecution of withholding crucial details pertaining to the genetic genealogy profile developed during the investigation.

The defense team contended that the entire focus of a considerable investigation centered solely on Kohberger, insinuating a lack of transparency in the prosecutorial approach.

In their recent submission, the defense demanded a comprehensive disclosure of this information.

“By withholding information and advocating for protection of the genetic genealogy investigation, the prosecution is concealing the core of their case,” stated the defense team.

Since his arrest at his parents’ residence in Pennsylvania in late December, Kohberger has been held in custody without the possibility of bail.

A judge has entered pleas of not guilty on behalf of Kohberger, with his trial scheduled for October 2, potentially carrying the death penalty if convicted.
