Planned Parenthood rakes in billions despite dwindling clients: report

The Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), a research and education organization affiliated with Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, recently published a fact sheet analyzing the latest financial report from Planned Parenthood. According to Tessa Longbons, a senior research associate at CLI, the key finding is that Planned Parenthood continues to function as a major player in the abortion industry, reaping substantial profits, including significant taxpayer funding.

Planned Parenthood’s financial report for 2021-2022 revealed a total income of $1.9 billion and net assets exceeding $2.3 billion, indicating an increase compared to the previous year. Private contributions accounted for $694.9 million of Planned Parenthood’s revenue, showing a 20% rise from the previous period.

Government funding in the form of grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements amounted to $670.4 million, constituting about 3% of its revenue. This translates to nearly $1.9 million per day, with an annual increase of $1 million from the previous year. Despite a 17.1% decrease in total services since 2010, taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood has surged by almost 37.5% during the same period.

In terms of services, Planned Parenthood conducted 374,155 abortions from 2020 to 2021, a slight decrease from the previous year. Longbons highlighted the contrast between Planned Parenthood’s financial growth and declining client numbers, compared to the expanding network of pregnancy centers that offer alternatives to abortion. These centers outnumber Planned Parenthood clinics by a ratio of 14 to one and enjoy strong public support.

Several states have enacted legislation to support mothers and their children, such as Florida’s allocation of $25 million for pregnancy resource centers and North Carolina’s provision of $160 million for childcare, parental leave, and community college assistance. A recent Knights of Columbus–Marist poll revealed that 69% of Americans support limiting abortion to the first three months of pregnancy, while 91% support pregnancy resource centers.

Despite the valuable services provided by pregnancy centers, they have faced over 100 attacks since the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in May 2022. Longbons emphasized the need for the Biden administration to enhance protection for these centers and ensure justice for any attacks against them.

In conclusion, the article underscores the ongoing debate surrounding abortion, the financial dynamics of Planned Parenthood, the vital role of pregnancy resource centers, and the challenges they face in the current social and political climate.
