2 suspects in 2018 Vermont murder-for-hire plot to stand trial next year

Two individuals are currently facing federal charges in connection to the abduction and murder of a man from Vermont in 2018, with their trial set to commence in the fall of 2024 as per the decision of a judge made on Friday.

U.S. District Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford has scheduled the trial to begin on October 7, 2024, for Serhat Gumrukcu from Los Angeles and Berk Eratay from Las Vegas. Both individuals entered a plea of not guilty last year for the charge of wire fraud, which is linked to an alleged international murder-for-hire scheme related to an oil transaction. Initially, Gumrukcu and Eratay were accused of orchestrating a plan with a third defendant, Jerry Banks, to abduct and murder Gregory Davis, a 49-year-old resident of Danville, Vermont.

Recently, Banks, who is from Colorado and allegedly carried out the abduction and killing of Davis, changed his plea to guilty.

Prosecutors reveal that Banks was involved in a scheme that originated when Davis threatened to report a fraudulent oil deal involving Gumrukcu to the FBI. Davis was later discovered deceased on a snowy back road in Vermont.

Another individual, Aren Lee Ethridge from Las Vegas, pleaded guilty in July and is currently awaiting sentencing.
