Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the importance of consumer trust in product labeling, stating, “Consumers should be able to trust that the label claims they see on products bearing the USDA mark of inspection are truthful and accurate.” Additionally, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), responsible for overseeing meat labeling, plans to update its guidelines to encourage companies to obtain third-party certification for their label claims, with the last revision dating back to 2019.

Recent research from the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center at George Washington University revealed that 42% of cattle raised in supposedly antibiotic-free feedlots tested positive for antibiotic residues in 2022. Lance B. Price, the center’s founder, highlighted the discrepancy between consumer expectations and product quality, stating, “Consumers pay a premium when purchasing (‘raised without antibiotics’) products. They should receive what they are paying for.”

The Consumer Federation of America’s food policy director, Thomas Gremillion, welcomed the USDA’s announcement as a positive step but emphasized the need for greater transparency in the approval process for meat and poultry labels.
