Swimmer, 59, pledges 82.5-mile fundraising swim from Milwaukee to Michigan

A man who successfully swam across Lake Michigan back in 1998 has announced his plans to embark on an even more challenging aquatic journey 25 years later. Jim Dreyer is gearing up to swim a minimum of 82.5 miles without taking a break, starting from Milwaukee and aiming to reach Grand Haven, Michigan, commencing on August 1st.

Dreyer, who will be celebrating his 60th birthday in August, has decided to use this remarkable feat as an opportunity to raise funds for the Chief Petty Officers Association, a non-profit organization that provides various support services to enlisted members of the U.S. Coast Guard. Expressing his gratitude towards these dedicated individuals, Dreyer stated in a recent press release that he is honored to contribute to the welfare of the Coast Guard personnel who safeguard Lake Michigan.

Known by the moniker “The Shark,” Dreyer achieved fame in 1998 when he swam from Two Rivers, Wisconsin, to Ludington, Michigan, covering a distance of 50 miles without taking a break. However, unforeseen strong currents extended his journey to a total of 65 miles. In a subsequent feat in 2013, Dreyer pushed his limits by towing bricks while swimming for an impressive 51 hours in Lake St. Clair, located in southeastern Michigan.

This upcoming endeavor by Dreyer showcases his unwavering determination and commitment to both personal challenges and charitable causes. As he prepares to take on this arduous swim across Lake Michigan once again, his efforts serve as a testament to the resilience and spirit of adventure that drive individuals to push beyond their limits for a greater purpose.
