Rex Heuermann’s wife pictured for first time as she files for divorce from Gilgo Beach serial slaying suspect

MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. — Asa Ellerup, the spouse of the suspected Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann, was seen in public for the first time on Wednesday, the same day she initiated divorce proceedings and less than a week after her husband was apprehended by New York authorities on six cold case murder charges.

Her attorney, Bob Macedonio, based in Islip, informed Fox News Digital that they had officially filed for divorce as he arrived at the Suffolk County Jail in Yaphank, where Heuermann is currently detained under suspicion of murdering three women and concealing their bodies in the foliage at Gilgo Beach, approximately 45 miles east of New York City.

“This entire situation has been overwhelming,” Macedonio stated. “Her life and the lives of her children have been completely upended.”

Shortly after the arrest of Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect, by Suffolk County police near his office on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, law enforcement officials visited the family residence in Massapequa Park and informed his wife and adult children of the allegations, according to Macedonio.

Subsequently, they confiscated the family’s passports, electronic devices, and computers, Macedonio added.

“The authorities arrived at their home, and they were completely caught off guard when they were informed of the situation,” he explained.

Law enforcement has maintained control of the property for nearly a week, cordoning off the area as investigators continued to examine the site, where they discovered numerous firearms and other evidence, including a depiction of an injured woman. Additionally, they searched Heuermann’s estate in South Carolina and impounded two Chevrolet Avalanche pickup trucks — the same model identified as a suspect vehicle in the disappearance of one of the victims at Gilgo Beach.

Heuermann entered a plea of not guilty on Friday to charges of first- and second-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Costello, 27.

These women were killed between June 2007 and September 2010 and were discovered wrapped in camouflaged burlap along Ocean Parkway in December 2010.

Heuermann is also the primary suspect in the death of a fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25.

A task force comprising members from various law enforcement agencies reportedly linked Heuermann to the crime scene through a witness statement in Costello’s disappearance, as well as through phone records and a DNA sample obtained from a discarded pizza box found in a New York City trash receptacle.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney revealed last week that traces of Heuermann’s wife’s DNA were discovered on some of the victims — despite her absence from the area during the time of the murders, she has not been implicated as a suspect.

Allegedly, her husband connected with sex workers online and via dating applications, enticing them to meet him before ultimately killing them and disposing of their bodies in a secluded area along Ocean Parkway, approximately 45 miles east of New York City.

During the search for another missing woman, Shannan Gilbert, who disappeared after contacting emergency services in a different beach community along the same parkway, authorities discovered the remains of the four aforementioned women.

Heuermann is scheduled to appear in court on August 1 and could face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.
