The interception occurred on June 26 when CBP officers intercepted two packages en route to an address in Washington, D.C. Upon inspection, the officers discovered around 70 pounds of N, N-Dimethylpentylone Hydrochloride, classified as a substituted cathinone and a scheduled I controlled substance.
Substituted cathinones, such as the one seized, are commonly sold on the streets in tablet or powder form, masquerading as ecstasy or molly. This particular drug was first identified in the United States in 2021.
The packages, labeled as beauty products, had arrived in Dulles from China. Upon opening the boxes, CBP officers found multiple vacuum-sealed bags containing a white crystallized substance.
Utilizing a handheld elemental isotope analysis tool, the officers confirmed the substance to be N, N-Dimethylpentylone Hydrochloride.
