NYC scooter shooting suspect charged with murder, accused of randomly firing at pedestrians

The individual accused of shooting four individuals in the Brooklyn and Queens boroughs of New York City on Saturday morning has been identified and formally charged.

Thomas Abreau, a 25-year-old, is currently facing multiple charges related to murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and attempted murder. Law enforcement authorities suspect that he was riding an illegal scooter while indiscriminately firing at pedestrians on the streets.

The suspect was observed exiting the 107th precinct in Queens on Sunday. Abreau displayed a peculiar smile as he was escorted into a vehicle, restrained in handcuffs and a jumpsuit.

The series of incidents commenced when a 21-year-old male was shot in the shoulder in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, at approximately 11:10 a.m. on Saturday. Roughly 20 minutes later, an 86-year-old man tragically succumbed to a gunshot wound in the back near 108th Street on Jamaica Avenue.

In quick succession, a 44-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the cheek near 126th Street, and a 63-year-old male was shot in the shoulder on 134th Street. All the victims were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities, with three currently recuperating from their injuries.

Authorities also disclosed that Abreau discharged his weapon at another location, fortunately without causing any injuries. Following the distribution of his images to all patrolling officers, Abreau was apprehended around 1:10 p.m.

The New York Police Department has refrained from divulging any details regarding a potential motive, characterizing the attack as seemingly arbitrary.

“We are currently unaware of the motive… If you examine the demographics and backgrounds of the victims, they are all distinct,” remarked Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny during a press briefing on Saturday. “Based on the available footage, it is evident that he is not singling out specific individuals. While riding his scooter, he appears to be firing at random pedestrians.”
