New York man charged in execution-style murder, while brother and friend face hindering prosecution charges

A man from Mastic Beach, New York, was charged with shooting another man in a deliberate manner in May, with his brother and friend accused of obstructing the investigation. Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney revealed that Joseph Scalafani, 34, was indicted for the murder of 32-year-old Alex Smith in the parking lot of a bar in Mastic Beach. Additionally, Scalafani’s brother, Daniel Scalafani, 30, and friend, Jeffrey Mercury, 61, were also indicted for aiding the suspect in escaping to Florida after the crime.

The Suffolk County Police Department discovered that on May 13, 2023, Joseph Scalafani forced his ex-girlfriend to arrange a meeting between him and Smith, violating a protection order. During this encounter, Scalafani allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened his ex-girlfriend with violence if she tried to escape. A week later, Smith was at Linsa Torr’s Place, a bar in Mastic Beach, with Scalafani’s ex-girlfriend. As they exited the bar, Scalafani approached them and shot Smith multiple times before fatally shooting him at close range.

Following the shooting, Scalafani crashed his vehicle and fled on foot, while Smith succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Daniel Scalafani and Mercury assisted Joseph in leaving New York after the incident, providing him with money and misleading the authorities about his whereabouts. Mercury even drove Scalafani to Virginia before dropping him off. Scalafani was apprehended by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in Florida on June 4 and was brought back to Long Island for arraignment on July 6.

Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins arraigned Scalafani on charges of second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree criminal contempt, and second-degree criminal contempt. He was detained, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 23, 2023. Tierney emphasized that Scalafani’s actions led to Smith’s death and that his attempts to evade capture with the help of his brother and friend were unsuccessful. Mercury and Daniel Scalafani were also arraigned on charges of hindering prosecution in June.
