Michigan man charged with defacing one of state’s oldest synagogues with swastika

A young man has been formally accused in federal court for vandalizing one of the oldest synagogues in Michigan by painting a swastika on its exterior in 2019.

The incident took place at Temple Jacob in Hancock, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Nathan Weeden, a 23-year-old resident of Houghton, has been charged with conspiring against rights and damaging religious property. Following his arrest in Saline, Michigan, he was released on bond and entered a not-guilty plea.

U.S. Attorney Mark Totten emphasized the importance of not targeting individuals based on their race, ethnicity, religion, or any other characteristic. Weeden’s attorney has not yet provided a comment on the matter.

The delay in indicting Weeden nearly four years after the vandalism occurred has raised questions. Tiffany Brown, a spokesperson for Totten, refrained from commenting on the reasons behind the timing of the charges.

In a separate incident in 2021, Richard Tobin from New Jersey was sentenced to a year in prison for orchestrating the defacement of Temple Jacob and a synagogue in Racine, Wisconsin. Tobin confessed to being affiliated with a white supremacist organization.

Temple Jacob, which was built in 1912, holds significant historical value in Michigan.
