Memphis firefighter killed in arson fire, authorities seek suspect

The Memphis Fire Department has determined that arson was the cause of a fire that occurred late Tuesday, claiming the life of Lt. Jeffrey Norman and causing injuries to three other firefighters who were trapped inside a burning residence.

According to a news release issued by fire officials on Thursday, the fire originated in a trash bin outside the house, subsequently spreading to a carport and an extension of the home above the carport.

In a statement, Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat described Norman, a veteran firefighter of 20 years, as “a brave and committed member of our team.”

“Jeffrey was known for his leadership and strong work ethic, always taking pride in serving his community,” Sweat remarked on Wednesday.
