Man accused in Jan. 6 riot arrested with weapons, materials for explosives near Obama’s home

A 37-year-old individual was apprehended and charged as a fugitive from justice in a neighborhood in Washington, D.C. this week, as confirmed by the city’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to Fox News Digital on Friday.

The individual, Taylor Taranto, had an outstanding warrant for his alleged involvement in the January 6 riot and was taken into custody following a pursuit by Secret Service agents near former President Obama’s residence.

According to the criminal complaint against Taranto, the FBI has been investigating individuals who unlawfully entered and committed offenses at the United States Capitol since January 6, 2021. Taranto, a resident of Washington state, was identified as one of these individuals.

At the time of his arrest, Taranto was found in possession of weapons and materials to construct an explosive device. The MPD’s Explosive Ordinance Team conducted a search of Taranto’s van, which was parked in close proximity to the arrest location on Kalorama Road, NW.

Law enforcement sources revealed that Taranto had made social media threats against a public figure, although the specifics of his alleged actions were not disclosed. Additionally, Taranto and another individual, David Walls-Kaufman, were sued by the widow of MPD Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, who tragically took his own life nine days after the riot. The lawsuit accused Taranto of providing a blunt instrument to Walls-Kaufman, who purportedly used it to strike the officer.

Taranto, a Navy veteran who had volunteered with the Republican Party in Washington state, denied the allegations against him in court documents. Walls-Kaufman was sentenced to two months in jail for charges of trespassing and disorderly conduct related to the events of January 6, 2021.

Despite Taranto’s social media posts indicating his participation in the riot, including a video captioned with provocative language, he has refuted the accusations against him. It remains unclear whether the Obamas were present at their D.C. residence during Taranto’s arrest.

The incident involving Taranto is still under investigation, and the MPD has assured the community that there is no immediate threat. The Associated Press contributed to the coverage of this report.
