Gale winds, torrential rain wreak havoc on parts of North Dakota

Recent severe weather wreaked havoc in various parts of North Dakota this week.

According to KFYR-TV, a powerful storm on Wednesday night caused significant damage to a manufactured home near Selfridge in south-central North Dakota. Brothers Arlin and Will Lund shared their harrowing experience with the station, describing how their home was demolished by straight-line winds after 3 inches of rain poured down in just 20 minutes. The force of the storm threw the brothers to opposite sides of the house, also destroying their barn in the process.

Will Lund sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in Bismarck for treatment, while Arlin Lund miraculously emerged unscathed, feeling grateful despite the chaos surrounding them.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Arlin Lund recounted, “The refrigerator and the wall were ripped away, followed by the floor collapsing. We found ourselves lying next to the car, shouting to locate each other amidst the chaos. As hail began to fall, I tossed him a blanket and searched for cover myself, as the hailstones felt sharp. Though it felt like an eternity, it was only a matter of seconds.”

He further shared his brother’s sentiment upon being rescued, stating, “My brother remarked as he was being taken to the ambulance, ‘Well, at least we’re alive.'”

The destructive winds, reaching speeds of up to 84 mph, overturned campers in Gladstone, located in Stark County in western North Dakota, early Thursday morning.

Reports from Roughrider Electric Cooperative revealed that the storm had caused 30 power poles to collapse along U.S. Highway 85 south of Belfield, with an additional 15 poles down near Richardton. Approximately 50 customers were left without power as a result, as detailed by the Bismarck Tribune.

Meanwhile, Montana-Dakota Utilities dealt with three storm-related outages, two of which were caused by lightning strikes and one due to a broken pole. These incidents impacted around 225 individuals in the Dickinson, Taylor, and Gladstone areas.
