Suspected Long Island serial killer to be prosecuted by Suffolk County DA

The prosecution of the suspected Long Island serial killer, Rex Heuermann, will be handled by Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney.

Heuermann faces six counts of murder, including one count of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder for each of the three victims – Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello.

Ray Tierney, who assumed office in January 2022 and has been in the legal field since 1992, is leading the prosecution against Heuermann, as stated by his office.

The statement from the DA’s office emphasizes Tierney’s commitment to fully prosecuting the case and seeking justice for the victims of this alleged serial killer. Additionally, the office will collaborate with Task Force partners to gather new evidence and prepare for trial.

Heuermann entered a plea of not guilty to all charges during a court appearance in July.

Following the filing of charges, Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, initiated divorce proceedings.

Authorities discovered 11 sets of human remains along a beach highway in Long Island between 2010 and 2011.

Investigators are actively searching Heuermann’s residence on Long Island for any additional evidence.

Heuermann, a married individual with two children, worked as an architect in Manhattan while residing on Long Island.

In a video interview with Bonjour Realty posted on YouTube in February 2022, Heuermann described himself as an architect consultant and troubleshooter, stating, “When a job that should’ve been routine suddenly becomes not routine, I get the phone call.”
